Mark Lilly

"Simply, I believe that humanity is worth more than money. Relationships are worth more than material. These thoughts pervade everything that I do." Mark Lilly started his studies of the Afro-Cuban Arts at Portland State University while searching for a way to connect with his African ancestry. The study of Orisa dance provided that connection and a foundation of spirituality, politics, ideology and aesthetics. Orisa became his oasis in this country's traditional fog of institutional racism and bigotry. Lilly began his study of Bata with master drummer Regino Jimenez, director of Danza Contemporanea De Cuba. Some of his accomplishments are the creation of the Afro-Cuban Dance Company Bembe Olele (the same year that he received his BS in Psychology from Portland State University), completion of his apprenticeship with dance instructor Roberto Borrell. Most recently Lilly was initiated to Ayan by master drummer Alfredo Coyute Vega. Lilly's teaching style focuses on technique and the development of spiritual energy through dance and focus. He currently lives in Seattle where he performs with Bembe Olele and teaches folkloric song and dance.

Born in June 2009 with the purpose and mission to preserve, share and represent the ancient Mexico, the Pre-Hispanic Mexico. Aztec dance is a culmination of five hundred years of cultural celebration within the valleys and forest of central Mexico. The dances have a variety of meanings, but all express respect for nature and her elements: earth, water, fire and wind. They connect each dancer to their inner selves and celebrate Nature and respect for all life. The Danza Quetzalcoatl interpretation of the various styles of Aztec dancers adds a new dimension to each performance.

Namaste. Until I discovered yoga in the mid-1990s, I essentially had no rhythm! Yoga helped me ground, become aware of my body, get out of the head -not the safest place in the world. I have been teaching yoga, meditation and breathwork since 2000, and my greatest joy is helping others connect with their body, breath, and Being. I lead retreats in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Sedona and here in the Pacific Northwest where I live. No yoga mat or experience needed for this easy workshop, just a willingness to breathe deeply, express yourself, and feel good. Learn to follow the music and rhythm of your beloved breath and body.
